It was titled for the Clatskanie River, which empties into the Columbia River inside the town/city limits.

Clatskanie comes from a Native American word, Tlatskani.

Smith, Tlatskani was a point in the Nehalem River that was reached from the Columbia River by way of the Youngs River or by way of the Clatskanie River.

Clatskanie is also the name of a Native American citizens , whose numbers dwindled from smallpox, intermittent fever, warfare, and intermarriage until they numbered only three citizens in a 1910 census. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 1.19 square miles (3.08 km2), all of it land.
